HOUR TWELVE

Nobody followed us as we went back to the Rook. Nobody could handle the smell. The stench was on Qi Qi and his boys as well, but your father took a direct hit. My only hope was that the stench would drive the A-CATs back up the hill before they took too deep a dive into the tracking records of everybody who had gathered to help below Turbine 235.

“You knew we would be in trouble if they scanned our trackers,” your father said. “That Italian scanned Dot’s tracker but didn’t bother with mine. Dot wanted you to say something?”

“Saying something wasn’t necessary,” I said. “She wanted me to manipulate them.”

“Something to do with your voice,” he said. “What does that mean?”

“You stink,” I told your father.

“Why would Canada want skunks?” he asked. “How can those soldiers detect landmines? What was that MedBot machine? And…you and I have an adopted adult daughter?”

“Owen,” I said as we reached the loft. “You’re like new students on the first day of school. I can’t answer ten questions at once.”

“Sorry,” he said. “The skunk. Who would want a skunk?”

“They want any mammal we can find,” I said. “Except rats and mice. Canada has plenty of those. Take off your clothes before you come inside.”

“I’m not doing that.”

“I saw you naked last night,” I said. “I see you naked every night. We have to find something that will neutralize the smell.”

“You have tomatoes,” he said. “Do you have tomato juice?”

“We’re not going to use our food for something like that,” I said.

“Okay,” he said, crossing his arms. “I’ll smell like this for the next month.”

“You plan on staying?”

“I don’t know,” he said.

“Why would you think tomato juice would neutralize the smell?” I asked.

“Somebody threw a skunk bomb at me once,” he said.

“We’ll try sodium bicarbonate and soap,” I said.

“Do you have hydrogen peroxide?” he asked.

“Thanks to your chemistry skills.”

“I didn’t think we’d have those things here,” he said. “Hydrogen peroxide will work.”

“Take off your clothes and get in the shower,” I said as I headed to the kitchen garden. “I won’t look.”

Your father figured out the shower but must not have figured out how to generate heat for the water. He shivered and danced as I brought him the peroxide and sodium bicarbonate.

“Use warm water,” I said.

“It’ll open my pores,” he said. “The stink will set in.”

“What were you thinking getting involved?” I said. “You’re on quarantine.”

“Dot came for me,” he said. “She asked me about being back at square one.”

“Did she?” I said. “Carol Oleander and Qi could have handled Lions Hill.”

“I don’t think so,” he said. “Those two wanted to get the boys to the wire. Those drones were on top of us when we got too close to the wire.”

“Those drones came because of you and you alone,” I said.

“Me?”

“You were being you,” I said. “Let’s leave it at that.”

“You have technologies I didn’t know existed,” your father said. “What is this place?”

“People will be removed if those A-CATs find evidence of criminality,” I said.
